[AIS] WYC Sailors in Olympic Campaign in the 49ers

Hi all,

We should support them in multiple ways. The least of which should be an article about their campaign, and regular articles about their progress. In addition I think we should have a celebration of the WYC to help raise some money for them, and maybe contribute to their campaign from the WYC.

From personal experience I can tell you that the cost of a US Sailing Team is very consuming in time and money, and there's not much coming from US Sailing. To have WYC members having such campaign is a wonderful thing.

Regards,

Bert

Subject: [AIS] FW: D&D Racing: April Update

Attention Bayfield sailors - Dan and Dave are making great strides in their Olympic effort!

Dan Morris, the son of AIYC member Gail Morris (Boomerang), together with teammate Dave Liebenberg make up D&D Racing. They are working on an Olympic campaign competing in the 49er class.

The two accomplished great results in January and February with outstanding performances at the Midwinters, the World Cup and NA Championships. Their effort in the first few months has qualified them as one of two teams on US Sailing Team Sperry. As a part of the US Team they have additional support with logistics, coaching, and performance based funding.

There are multiple avenues to help you track their progress. Check out their Face Book page and website link below:
https://www.facebook.com/LiebenbergMorrisOlympicSailing
http://www.olympicsailing.org/

I would like to personally ask you to take a minute to review their website and note the need for our support. With the Olympics clearly in mind, their focus is on constantly improving. Please donate and help these guys get to the next level.

Currently, they are again competing with the world’s best in a series of European regattas. See the note below for the latest update.

Pete

Stage Two of our campaign for Rio began with two weeks of training in Palma de Mallorca. Palma provided great conditions, a few days of fresh offshore breeze and flat water, a few days of sea breeze, and no training days similar to the first two days of racing.

Palma
The first two days of racing were qualifiers to sort 74 boats into three separate fleets (Gold, Silver, Bronze). Performing well on Days 1 and 2 is critical to having a good result. Gold Fleet is boats 1-25, Silver is 26-50, Bronze is 51-74. A strong performance in qualifiers secures your position in the top group of the fleet and qualifies you for the next World Cup regatta. A poor first two days leaves you battling in one of the other fleets.

Our performance on Days 1 and 2 did not meet our own standards or expectations. Many people noted how challenging the conditions were on these days, with breeze ranging from 5-25 knots. Our stance is that, yes conditions were challenging, but they were equally challenging for every team competing. We just did not race as a team the way we have in the past. With only three races counted in those first two days, we had very little chance to reset and begin sailing as we know how to. We had been seeded into Bronze Fleet for the rest of the regatta. This was unfortunate, but it did not mean we give up. Having three disappointing races is not a reason to have another disappointing race. It was time to step up, time to reset and begin sailing as the team we are.

D&D Racing arrived on Day 3 to sail three more races. It was a day of clear communication, sound decision making, and clean execution. We sailed the boat the way we train to sail the boat, trusting each other just as we would trust ourselves. Having confidence in each other was the key to our comeback. After three strong races we were in the top group of Bronze Fleet.

Day 4 was a great chance to reinforce the trust, confidence, and communication that make us such a strong team. Three races of three laps in 18-22 knots just off the beach with waves beginning to stack, demanded clean execution at every maneuver and decision made. After a great day of racing it was clear that we had made the reset. D&D Racing got its mojo back and was in 2nd place in Bronze Fleet.

Day 5 was a light Palma sea breeze, gaining experience racing in this condition was an objective for this stage. Three races in this condition required clean starts and the ability to sail free. This condition has very small differences in boat speed throughout the fleet so every inch counts. We finished the regatta in 4th place for Bronze Fleet, highlighted the areas to focus our upcoming training block, and departed Palma as a much stronger team than when we arrived.

In this stage of the campaign, every regatta is a chance to develop and grow. Coming out of a regatta as a stronger team is more important than coming out with a result. In our second International regatta we learned the importance of going into Day 1 of a regatta swinging. There is no time to settle in and get used to the racing or the fleet. Days 1 and 2 are the most important of the regatta. We will not forget this, nor we will forget that what makes us a strong team is the absolute trust in each other to be excellent at executing our roles on the race course.

Lake Garda
A great coach told us: Bad days are more important than good days. Bad days teach the biggest lessons. Coming out of a bad day as a stronger team means it was not a bad day at all. Our regatta in Palma was a big step for D&D Racing. Our passion for 49er sailing is unaltered, our work ethic is unfaltering, and our potential is growing. Without SWC Hyeres on our calendar, we have headed straight to Lake Garda. We are focusing on prestart boat handling and accelerations, and the decision making and execution at marks. Starting next week we have an eight day training camp with Rick Peacock, a past british 49er sailor, and our US training partners. Lake Garda is the perfect place to take advantage of this. Strong Northerlies from 6am to 10am dieing out to be replaced by Southerlies in the afternoon allow for double sessions to make the most out of valuable coaching time. Results come from preparation, now is the time to put in the hours on the water!

Following this training camp, our next regatta is the Garda Eurosaf Olympic Week (May 6-10). Stay tuned!
