Denise,

You have an interesting question (and Eric or Joel should be able to provide
an answer), but it's unrelated to the decision at hand: keep or dump the
domains www.capri25.net <http://www.capri25.net> and
www.capri25national.org <http://www.capri25national.org>

Let's suppose the traffic is near zero. The value of the domains could
exceed $8 if they brought just one additional boat to the nationals. This
is possible since people set bookmarks and search engines know the domains.
If we are going to drop these domains, we should do so after the nationals,
not with just 4 months to go. Cross linking won't help if the domains go
away.

IANAM (I am not a marketer), but I'd like to know, how did boats like Dragon
Lady (and others who did not come, but may come in future years) heard about
the nationals? If these domains were involved, then they are valuable
property despite what any traffic analysis may say.

The two sites are already crossed linked. For example, the national site
refers people to the WYC site for listings of boats for sale. I think a
better question to ask is how many people actually hit the national site on
any regular basis. Is there year-round traffic or were there just bursts
when the site was initially launched and as we got closer to regatta-time?

How about a compromise?

Rather than shut it down and abandon existing users, why not point the
domain(s) to the WYC Capri25 pages? This would preserve the value of the
domains, garner traffic for WYC, and cost nothing (other than $8/yr for the
domain).

In other words, all the files at http://www.wyc.org/capri25/
<http://www.wyc.org/capri25/> would also appear at www.capri25national.org
<http://www.capri25national.org>

This employs a webserver trick (virtualhosts) so the McDonagh's (who
subsidize hosting of wyc.org) would need to make a minor change to their
server's configuration, and the domain owner (Eric?) would have to update
DNS to point to the McDonagh server.

As regatta co-chair, I would be inclinded to shut it down. I really do not
believe we will attract any out of town boats through that web site. Any
interest we get will more likely come from the WYC Capri website. I assume
most search engines would direct people to our site especially if the other
site is shut down. Time to get started on planning this years regatta. I'll
put something out very soon......................Dutch Bull

Hi all,

The capri25.net site hosting contract is about to expire. Joel had
previously paid for all the setup, hosting, and domain name expenses for a
year of hosting and 2 years of domain name registration (www.capri25.net
<http://www.capri25.net> and www.capri25national.org
<http://www.capri25national.org> ). We need to collectively decide if we
want to continue the national site and to fund it somehow.

At this point, there are no further setup costs (I've been maintaining the
site), and I've been able to reconfigure the hosting contract to use a
cheaper yearly plan. Thus the new yearly expenses will total $63 a year.
This coming Friday, the site will be shut down.
