[Capri25] NOMINATIONS

Hi Capri Fleet Sailors,

I see that some nominations for fleet Captain are coming through in emails. Have the people making the nomination spoken with the person and asked these questions:

1. Have you spoken to the nominee?

2. Are they willing to serve?

3. Do they want the job, or do they look at it as is time for them to give back?

4. Do they have time to do the job?

Surprise nominations in an email or from the floor are not the way to do it for a serious leadership position. It doesn't matter much for a small or minor position, but even with that it is nicer to speak to somebody had a time so they can think about it and decide for themselves if it's something they wanted to.

Regards,

Bert

Hi Capri-25 sailors,

I thought I would give you some perspective on selecting fleet captains.

Fleets are run very autonomously with some having a lot of rules, procedures, documentation, etc., and others run very loosely with little or no organization and not much effort needed on the part of the fleet Captain. The Capri-25 fleet falls in the first category which helps make them a great fleet. Therefore, it would make sense to use a process in selecting your fleet officers that is not significantly different than that in the attachment which shows the criteria for selecting WYC board members and flag officers.

1. They don't need to be a full member of the yacht club nor a boat owner to be a good fleet Capt.

2. You probably want a hard-core racer who is also embedded in the social environment of the fleet.

3. They must love the boat and the fleet.

4. Because the Capri fleet is complex with rules, procedures and activity, it’s pretty important that you have somebody who is competent.

5. It's important that you have somebody who is willing and wants to serve the fleet they love

6. It must be the right time in their personal life so that they will have the time to contribute. That means not too busy at work, not too busy at home, and not too busy with other outside activities.

7. In some fleets, it is important to have a fleet captain with leadership qualities and a strong principle of fairness, with the ability to say “no” to some loud voices in the fleet who are constantly wanting to change the rules to make them advantageous to their own self-interest.

I hope you find this helpful. Carmella and I are planning to attend the meeting, and looking forward to discussing the changes in the WYC race program for 2013 and answer any of your questions.

Regards,

Bert

Hello;

Rules question: with our fleet officer elections at the three boat length circle, do you have to be a boat owner to run for fleet captain?
