[Capri25] Rumble

Hey guys, I'm not an official crew rep, but I thought I would put some thoughts out there. I have seen lots of votes for a 2pm start. The race committee will not start a race after 3pm, meaning we get only about 1 hour (plus 10-15 mins) of racing in. I guess I envisioned a little bit more of an intensive racing day when it comes to these new "Rumbles". Personally, running the rumbles as a separate series is the best plan. I have been in the position as a tactician where a series has come down to our performance in the "Rumble". The "rumble" turned into a "grumble" when rules were inconsistently enforced (especially at the starting line, where there should have probably been a few general recalls...then as boats realized they were not going to be called over, they began to really push the envelope of fair seamanship, punishing those who started below the line with their illegally obtained dirty air), and communication about course and start sequence from the race committee was lacking, not to mention the tactical nightmare of 25 boats rounding the mark at virtually the same time after a first beat of less than a quarter mile ("mid course" start line could be set closer to the leeward mark than the windward in my opinion, perhaps about 2/3 of the course length should be above the start line, to help spread the boats out a bit more). I know our race committee will do what they can to make these races fair and enforce the rules, but I pity any boat that has to try to win a mini-series like the rumble with no throw-outs in order to secure their place in a Championship (or A, B, C) Series. Yes, this is a bit of a rant, but I'd hate to see the prestige of the Championship Series damaged just to "spice things up". Stewart Carpenter

I?m inclined to leave these logistical issues to the RC because they will have the same problems on every Sunday as they run Rumbles for the other one-design fleets.

It is not a replacement for a Sunday race and therefore the position in the one day regatta will not be scored in the series race that day that it replaced.

Some of the races will be longer than others, and therefore there will be no maximum number of races. Let's see how it goes. With the wind out of the South we may well move the rumble races to the main Lake, but with the wind in an east-west direction the Bay works great. Length of the races will very a great deal depending upon wind velocity.
