[Capri25] SUBMIT YOUR STORIES FOR THE 2017 Man Overboard Trophy

Just to clarify, isn’t this trophy specific to the Capri fleet? While I agree the situations can be serious, they can also be comical which makes a good story for the selection process. As far as I know, this trophy has always gone to someone who fell overboard from a Capri (or sank the whole boat). If you want to have a “life-saver” trophy for a boat that assists, I think it should be given by the yacht club, not the fleet, with boats from all fleets being eligible. The Capri fleet can still give their own trophy for foredeck gymnastics.

Totally agree with Craiggae and Odell!

Recognizing the people to came to help and if you want to recognize funny situations, then rename or start a different trophy

Should we really be joking about potentially life-threatening incidents?

Bert Foster would often say “no one ever died in Lake Minnetonka while wearing a life jacket.” While that has a certain ring of truthiness, I was involved in a COB rescue on the lake this year that gave me pause. After watching 3 other boats attempt to recover the swimmer over the course of 10 min, we made contact but it took another 5min to pull the soaking and shivering crew aboard, despite the relatively low freeboard of a J/22. Her automatic inflator had deployed but only one side inflated (presumably because the Velcro had never been exercised). Once aboard, she asked for another PFD least she find herself back in the water. I asked the swimmer how long she thought she had been in the water. Answer was “couple of minutes.” She was clearly hypothermic and we eventually convenience her to shelter below.

We gave up several places to affect this rescue, and RRS 60.1(b) request-for-redress was granted with “average points.” This would have been worse than DFL but Blake corrected an obvious injustice.

Standing offer: there’s a bottle of rum for any boat that rescues me or a member of my crew. Awarded once so far, when I asked “what kind of rum do you like?” the answer came back “the kind with a handle.”
