Regatta Update!

As a refresher, this is US Sailing's national championship regatta (for people aged 19+). It is an invite only regatta with regional sailing associations each submitting one nomination from their member clubs. This year, the event will be in J/70's which are being provided by their members at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Their members have made 15-20 boats available. We will be hosting next year's event (Sept 25-29, 2018) and it will be in J/22's.

Boat Owners - We need your boats!

Accordingly, we need the J/22 boat owners to agree to loan their boats to these highly skilled teams. The organizers and the yacht club know that this is a big commitment for J/22 boat owners (thank you, in advance!) and as a thank you for allowing the use of your boats, the organizers and yacht club have also agreed to land and organize the 2019 J/22 North American championships, which we have done. That event will be in June of 2019.

I have made a few calls already and have heard from a few boat owners that they will loan their boats and I will continue making calls. We would like to have 15-20 boats available, with an additional spare of two above that amount. Most questions I have had have been about possible damage. Last year, there was no damage to any boats, so our hope is we will have the same luck. However, we have implemented several things to mitigate any issues.

1) Each team must provide a $1500 deposit before the regatta begins.
2) Each boat will be checked in the morning and in the evening, at a minimum, to make sure no damage has occurred during that day's racing.
3) Jon Monson has said he is willing to be on site at the end of the day to do any repairs on site, if possible, and said that $1500 would cover nearly all incidents of damage that could happen.
4) The yacht club will have insurance for this regatta that would cover any damage above and beyond the team deposit.
5) If a team has an incident and the deposit is used to pay for the repair, then they will need to maintain their $1500 deposit amount in order to keep racing.
6) It is our intent to keep the boats in the water during the regatta, so no one will be trying to land on lifts.
7) We will also have a bosun on site to make sure that any equipment that is broken on your boat will be repaired or replaced. Tim Carlson, from Sail Crafters, has agreed to have a selection of parts available for the regatta.

If you are willing to loan your boat and do not need to speak with me about logistics, please send me a quick reply to this message letting me know we can use your boat. That way I can shorten my call list.

We will be talking with the US Sailing Championship Director on November 7th and I would like as many answers from boat owners as possible by then, so please respond in the next week.

Sails

Since US Sailing wants the boats to be as similar as possible, they are going to have North Sails provide new sails for each boat. In order for North to make that commitment, they have asked that the WYC sell off half of the sails at a 25% discount (to our members or others) and they will sell the remainder. It is possible to claim a set before the event and North will put your numbers on the sails, if your boat is used for the event. It will also be possible to claim a set after the regatta if some are available. It is my understanding that the deal will be better if the regatta is excessively windy. We will know more about that as we continue to dialogue with North and US Sailing.

The organizers would, of course like to have these sails claimed as soon as possible. We already have three sets claimed, but we need to sell between 7 and 10 sets total, depending on the number of boats we use, so we have a few more to get commitments on.

Qualifier

In order to get into this event, each regional sailing association selects a nominee which is then submitted to US Sailing and then they invite teams from that list. Some associations do qualifiers and others do nomination by resume. The Twin Cities Regional Sailing Association (TCRSA) is working with WYC to use the Cool Regatta as its qualifier, with the winner getting the TCRSA's nomination. So, start coordinating with you're A-crews for that event in the spring!
