Northome Series is Wednesday nights and J22s from WYC are eligible to
participate. The Race starts at 6:15 so for all you J22 sailors that didn't make
it to Bayfield they would sure like to see us at the Northome. For those of
you like me in the middle or back of the fleet its a great way to get some
extra sailing practice with your crew and a lot less traffic to worry about
during the race! Another reason to participate is that you can actually
win the series. Since starting to race my J22 four years ago we have never done
better than the "Participation Award" (ooh awh!) but have had a lot of fun
and learned a lot from the stiff competition in our J22 WYC fleet. We actually
scored some silver hardware last year winning the Northome Series for
J22s. I'll be honest there wasn't always a lot of boats to race, "ok" sometimes
we were the only one but the point being for us middle and back of fleet
guys <STRONG><EM>"we were a contender"</EM></STRONG> and <STRONG><EM>"we
were a somebody"</EM></STRONG>. There is food and beer for a small
donation at MYC after the race and all are welcome. For those of you
considering tonight's race read on otherwise I'll see you this Sunday.

<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2><SPAN class=664000014-07072004>The first time I did
this race it took me a couple races to figure out what in the hell
was going on since it is different than what we were use to at WYC.
Here is my feeble attempt to act as a catalyst and accelerate your learning
curve. As I mentioned earlier the warning gun goes off at 6:15. The
start is always located in front of MYC so sometimes depending on wind direction
it could be a spinnaker start. We are usually the 4th start and share it with MC
scows. If enough J22 show up tonight maybe Blake will give us our own. The
start line is located between the committee boat and a small buoy that has
yellow and red spiral stripes on it. Blake usually sets a W-2 course for
the J22s and occasionally does something different like using the island that
MYC is located on as one of the rounding marks but this is rare. One yellow
tetrahedron mark will be located on the course just after the start line and
will be the mark you round starting your 3rd leg and pass by to finish the race
on the 4th leg. The distal mark is usually an orange buoy with no offset mark
that you round to begin legs 2 and 4. Check the course board on located on
the stern of committee boat and it should list "J22 & MC" 4th down the
board, a course of "W-2" and the color "Orange" for the distal buoy to round.
Don't go to the Yellow distal mark that is farther out this is for the faster
scows. The finish line is the same as the start line.</SPAN></FONT></DIV>
