Direct solicitation of new boat orders is not feasible on a one-by-one basis, but the class association can help coordinate bulk orders. Parts from molds will be available. The class association will be testing this type of purchase with something such as a rudder order. <o:p></o:p></li></ol><p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;margin-left:.5in;line-height:14.4pt'>MASTS<br>There are two options for getting masts today: Sparcraft America in Charleston or Sparloft in New Zealand. The Sparcraft masts are expensive (the mast is $3,540 and Sparcraft recommends getting new rigging as well for an additional $1,100). The Sparloft masts are cheaper, but shipping from New Zealand is not trivial. The class association talked about this and with input from Jeff Johnstone. The class association has a quote from Sparloft in New Zealand that comes in at $2,320 US per mast with shipping to Boston included. The mast includes a spreader bar, the casting for the forestay and the base casting and plate. John at Sparloft says the mast will work fine with rigging from a Hall mast. Further, the gooseneck fitting for the Sparloft masts is compatible with a Hall boom. When they talked to Doug Green at Sparcraft, he said he was blocked by company policy from doing a bulk purchase arrangement unless there were a rigger or equivalent involved. The other question was the performance of the two masts. The general feedback from people who have both Sparloft and Sparcraft masts was positive. Terry Flynn said that he had experience with a Sparloft mast some time back which he felt was soft, but other feedback the class association had was positive. The class association feels it makes sense to do something to help with masts. The class association president is willing to fund the purchase of five Sparloft masts and to store them. They already have three people that needs masts. <br><br>Everyone voiced their support for the plan. The arrival timing of the first five masts is a couple months, so after the Worlds. Holly and Matt (class president) are aware of “extra” masts which will be arranged for availability in Annapolis (Jason and Jeff offered to store them in advance, if needed). Group purchases of rudders may also make sense. Matt will prepare an article on this topic for the next newsletter. <o:p></o:p></p><ol start=3 type=1><li class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:14.4pt;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1'><b>Technical Report </b>– The J/22 Technical Ruling to allow ProStart-type devices went into effect July 1, 2018. This has been posted online and in the Spring newsletter. The Technical Committee is reviewing which other high-tech devices (such as the RaceGeek and the Vakaros Atlas) fall within the parameters of the intent of this Ruling.<br><br><o:p></o:p></li><li class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto;line-height:14.4pt;mso-list:l0 level1 lfo1'><b>Championship Updates – <br></b>-<i>2018 World Championship</i> at Annapolis Yacht Club, MD, September 8-14: 66 boats are registered. Jeff Johnstone will be onsite. Good sponsors are on board. Measurement will be scheduled Sunday and Monday on a first-come/first-serve basis including multiple stations. Entrants will see e-mails regarding all of the onsite entry requirements.
