                        U.S. J/24 Class Association Update

                        From the USJCA
Kelly Holmes-Moon at the helm of Bad Moon

Hello fellow J/24 sailors. I hope that you enjoy
this information update to the U.S. class. The USJCA team is working to try
to put out as much information as needed on a regular basis so stay tuned
for more updates to come. I would like to thank Tonja Sanchez (Fleet 163)
for her efforts in setting up the newsletter account, and Executive Director
Eric Faust's extra effort in putting together the content.

Any news report is only as good as the information
given and we need your help to get the word out. If you have any information
you need to distribute to the class, such as a good story, regatta report,
youth sailing, etc., please send it to Eric Faust at director at j24class.org.

To help meet the goal of keeping in touch with the
J/24 class, at the last Governor's meeting, I brought up the idea of a
designated "information czar". One of the duties of this person would be to
publish our yearly magazine. The magazine has fallen by the wayside and it
is my goal is to resurrect it, but we need somebody to take point. If you
have ever dreamed of being a magazine publisher/editor, this is your moment.
Please contact me at badmoon at earthlink.net.

If you have any other feedback please feel free to
email me or call me at (940) 399-9805.

                        Your President,
                        Kelly Holmes
                        Team Bad Moon, USA 267

                        U-Gotta Regatta!

This year's edition of the annual U-Gotta Regatta
will also serve as the U.S. J/24 Great Lakes
Championship. The regatta starts next weekend
(October 8-9) so if you are anywhere within driving distance of Lake
Minnetonka, Minnesota (home of the first ever J/24 fleet in the world) you
should make plans to attend.

If you've never been, this is a great place to sail
and the hospitality is always top-notch. And if you're lucky they will have
the E-Scow bar set up for the after race happy hour. U-Gotta go there to
believe it...

More information and online entry are available now

World's Highest Yacht Club Hosts 2012 Nationals

J/24 Fleet 46 and the Dillon Yacht Club will be
hosting the 2012 J/24 National Championship on beautiful Lake Dillon,
Colorado on June 26th - 30th, 2012. At over 9000 feet above sea level, these
guys are not kidding when they lay claim to being the "World's Highest Yacht
Club." Sailing on this scenic mountain lake is something you won't want to
miss, so mark your calendars now!

By winter, Dillon, Colorado is a big skiing town so
they have literally hundreds of condos for rent within walking distance of
the club. What could be easier?

The regatta website is being built now, so look for
an update soon. For now, here's the link to the Dillon Yacht Club:

Have you walked around your yacht club and noticed
dirty, grimy J/24s sitting there desperately looking for someone to give her
a scrub down? Don't you feel bad that the poor J/24 is being neglected when
there are so many great J/24s that are over 30 years old and are still
kicking ass on the race course today? Well, help us find those boats so that
that we can have a J/24 revival!!

I am spearheading the organization of database
containing the hull numbers and current owners of J/24s that are still alive
and kicking (even if they haven't touched the water in years). Currently I
have begun in the state of Texas, but would like to reach out to the Class
Members in order to get your help in finding those boats.

If you know of any J/24s that are at your yacht
club, an adjoining yacht club or is sitting in a friend's yard, please send
the boat owner's name and contact info (email and/or phone number), or send
my contact information to them.

                        Get Into Sailing!

With the economy making everyone thing twice about
how they spend their money, sometimes sailing gets put to the side,
especially when it comes to road trips. While there will always be many of
us that will be road warriors, it is important to know about and encourage
others to take part in the many other opportunities to sail. How, you ask?

Join a Yacht Club or Encourage Your Crew to Join

There are many different kinds of yacht clubs out
there. They range from clubs that are heavily involved in sailing, racing,
social, and kids' activities to clubs that strictly gather for sailboat
racing, and then there are some that are a mix between the two.

And being a member of a yacht club does not have to
be expensive. When looking at the membership levels, check on out-of-town
memberships if you live some distance away from the club, but close enough
to drive for weekend sailing. Many times these fees are much less than you
would expect. If you don't have a boat, some clubs have one-design boats
that are part of the membership perks. There is a nice convenience to be
able to have the use of a great one-design hull without the additional
expense of ownership.

                        Help Teach Youth Sailing

If you are an experienced sailor and want to give
back to the sailing community, consider teaching youth sailing at your local
sailing or yacht club. Our sailing youth are the next contenders for
one-design racing, and the best way to keep one-design racing a top notch
sport is to share your knowledge. Not only is this extremely rewarding for
you as a coach, but the mentorship that these kids receive is something that
will be with them for a lifetime.

                        Get Involved in Race Management

As anyone knows, racing is only as good as the race
management team. If you have ever complained about the race course, it may
be time to jump right in and become part of the solution!

To get involved in race management, contact the race
captains for local sailing and yacht clubs and ask to volunteer on their
race committee. I don't think you will experience one person say "no"! Once
you get a taste of what is involved, go to the next step and register for
some race management classes. You can find more information about race
management at www.ussailing.org.

Get on out there and GET SAILING!
