Uta, you are hired! The job is yours until you do not want it anymore, and then you have to find your own replacement!

Carmella,

Thanks for all the helpful insight! I would be happy to act as list admin for the J24 fleet. Much of my work is email-based, so it would be easy for me to respond in a timely manner when the server needs attention. Please let me know how to proceed.

Regarding messages not coming through, we all might want to check our spam filter settings and whitelist j24 at lists.wyc.org<mailto:j24 at lists.wyc.org>. I specifically set up a filter in Gmail to never send anything from lists.wyc.org<http://lists.wyc.org> to spam (and I have noticed some list server messages ending up with a little flag that they were only not sent to spam because of my filter).

Best,
Uta

Dear J24 Fleet members,

I have checked the J24 list server administration page, and your group has no administrator. Every fleet should have an administrator. This is not a difficult job. Some of the duties of the administrator are:

Only members of the list server have permission to send emails to the group. Occasionally, the administrator will receive notice that a non-member has sent a message to the group, which needs to be released or deleted.

Occasionally, someone will send an email to the group with a large attachment, or with several attachments, and the administrator will be asked to approve and release the email for delivery.

Occasionally, someone will send an email to the group, and also to a bunch of additional recipients. The list server does not like this, and will ask the administrator to approve and release the email for delivery.

Occasionally, some stranger from some foreign country will try to subscribe to the group for some non-sailing-related purpose, such as to sell “discounted prescription drugs”. The administrator can remove this person from list membership and block all future attempts of that email address to join the group.

If someone in the fleet is interested in being the list server administrator, I will be happy to offer a brief tutorial.

Hi Sean,
I would say from the emails that I have received, that you are one of the most enthusiastic, if not THE most enthusiastic, fleet captain the club has had in ANY fleet for some time. (I said the same thing last year about Shawn Patterson.)

Regarding the email list server, a few weeks ago it was down completely. No one’s emails went out, no one could subscribe to a group, and no one noticed for at least a week. Jonathan and Jim McDonagh were quick to repair the problem once it was reported, and a week’s worth of emails were released at once, flooding inboxes everywhere.

Regarding your emails, the ones I have recently received from you are:

7/17/2015, Do you have what it takes Yeah, I’m talking to you.
7/20/2015, July Rumble proclaimed a success
7/23/2015, Please join us Saturday for the Woman’s Cup Big Island Race
7/30/2015, Women’s Series next 4 weeks!
8/10/2015, Final Rumble Sunday
8/13/2015, FREE DONUTS!? MMMM

Were there more? Do you know who is the administrator of the J24 list server? It should be someone in your fleet. That person should be able to see bounce reports, but that only applies if emails being sent TO you are being rejected. There should not be any problem related to having a Yahoo email account. If you send an email to the J24 group, you should see it immediately in your inbox. If you do not see it, Jonathan is probably the best person to investigate. Hope this has been helpful.

Who else has had trouble with the listservers? I have been bounced off many times over the past several years. You won't necessarily know if you are not receiving, nor if your email have been going out.

Getting back on is not easy either, as I am still waiting from last week. As a work-around, Uta said she would forward emails from the past J/22 fleet captain. So, dear, will you do for me as well?

Her research seems to link it to Yahoo emails. Does anyone have insight on this rather frustrating problem?

Sean
Your (previously) silent fleet Captain

PS: If you missed my emails, I really am sorry, for they were very well constructed, noted for their brevity, yet surprisingly informative, a touch piquant with just the right dash of wit. Unfortunately I will not be sending any more like this.
