The Ice is Out!



The Hennepin County Sheriff' office and the Freshwater Society announced that the ice went out this morning, Thursday, March 17th, at 12:15.



I went to the Freshwater Society and looked up the past ice-out dates.  They have a record of it for every year going back to 1855.  In the past 161 years the ice went out only 9 times in March .  This makes today's ice-out the second earliest one in history; the earliest being on March 11, 1878 (before MYC even existed!).



The vast majority of years the ice-out took place in April. It took until May to go out five times with the latest ice-out on record being on May 5 in 1857.
