Hello everybody -

Dave Crum asked that we document the 'best method' for craning our 7.9s at WYC.
Thanks to Alec Kloss, John Andrus, and Kevin Kenny for helping make this happen.

Note: It's just WAY simpler to drop the stick, motor over to the Gray's Bay ramp and pull out on the trailer there. But if you need the crane...here's the procedure:

1) Pull the boat in to the crane side of the slip, bow nearly up to the sea wall.
2) Position the strong back, such that the lifting (center) point is about 4" aft of the forward part of the aft cabin window. Here:

3) Use an 18' strap forward. It can be rigged outside or inside of the lifelines.
4) Use a 21' strap aft, rigged inside of the lifelines.
5) Make certain there are no twists, either in the straps or especially in the chainfall of the crane.
5) Pull the forward strap slightly toward the bow, and the aft strap about 2' toward the stern.
6) Begin the lift. The boat should come out, bow up very slightly. If it's more than a little bit, return it to the water and pull the aft strap more toward the transom.
7) With strong bow and stern lines pull both fore and aft to keep the boat's motion steady when rotating the crane arm. Don't let the hull swing / rock.

It is possible to do this with the mast up / backstay disconnected. However, be sure that the forward crossmember of the strongback does NOT rub against your sidestays as you lift the boat. Additionally, watch out for the mast smacking in to the crane arm.

The bunks on you trailer will likely 'trap' the lifting straps. If so, disconnect both straps. Then use another 21' strap, rigged diagonally (right front to left rear) on the strongback, to lift the transom of your boat a few inches. BUT be certain to position the crane arm so that the lift is pulling the boat several degrees FORWARD as well as up. Otherwise the strap will slip.

Do the same for the bow, but reverse the arm angle. Pull AFT and up.

Hope this helps.
