Sheboygan Invitational Team Racing Championship and Clinic

Introduction

Hans Graf, Executive Director at the US Sailing
Center of Sheboygan and Bert Foster, RC Chair of the
Wayzata Yacht Club are organizing the event. The
purpose of the event is to introduce and further
the interest in “Team Racing” in Sonars to adult
sailors who have been fleet racing for some time
and want to try “Team Racing”. It will take
place at the US Sailing Center of Sheboygan in
their 8 matched Sonars plus one additional Sonar

Coach

Ken Legler has been engaged to coach the clinic and the 2 days of racing.

Ken Legler is the current preeminent sailing
coach with the Tufts University Sailing
Team. Past accomplishments include All-American
sailor, US Sailing Team Coach, and national
champion in college dinghies, team racing,
one-design, offshore, and blind sailing as a
sighted guide. Ken has participated in sixteen
world championships as a competitor, principal
race officer, head judge, commentator, and US
Sailing Team coach. Since Ken began coaching at
Tufts University in 1980, Tufts has won 19
college nationals have earned a collective 93
All-American honors. Prior to Tufts, Ken coached
at the US Merchant Marine Academy and the US Naval Academy.

Race Management is one of Ken's greatest areas of
expertise. Since 1994 Ken has been a Principal
race Officer at Acura Key West Race Week, the
biggest and best regatta in the United States.

Team Racing is a particular passion of Ken's,
which he shares as commentator at the British
Open for the Wilson Trophy in West Kirby, England
and the Team Racing World championships at various venues.

Coaching with Kattack

We will bring Kattack units for the 9 Sonars and
the WYC projector. At the debrief at the end of
each day we will project the activity on a screen
and Ken Legler will enlighten the group of 27 sailors.

Invitations

Three teams will race with 3 boats on a team. The teams being invited are:
a. WYC Fleet #5
b. The Winnipeg Sonar fleet with fill in from Fleet #5
c. The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit.

Racing

Racing will be mainsail and jib only (no
spinnakers). There will be no boat
swapping. The course will be a short windward
leeward with a center start finish with one time
around. It will make the races 8 to 15
minutes. Team A will race B while C
watches. Then A races C and B watches, then B
races C and A watches. During the ”watching” Ken
will do some debriefing/coaching. The coach and PRO could change this

Umpiring

Because this is more of an introduction and
learning experience event, the umpiring will be
less formal than would be used in a high level event.

Prizes

Prizes will be awarded.

Cost

The entry fee is $1200 per team. Three boats per
team. Three sailors per boat. That’s $133.00 per
person and will include continental breakfast,
lunch, water, and debrief refreshments for
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Friday night
cocktails, Saturday night dinner and an award for
each skipper and crew. Extra dinner tickets can be purchased for $25 per person

Summer Team Racing Training

In the planning stage is one Friday night Team
Racing evening per month at WYC with 6 boats and
RC plus team racing coaching evening by Blake,
Gordy, and Dave Elsmo (head of Wayzata Sailing School)
