[Sonar] Prelude to the Lonar

        It’s June on Lake Minnetonka and for those of us at the WYC and Sonar Fleet 5, June has a special meaning. The LONAR.  That one race where one man (or woman) and one boat pitted against the other friendly rivals in Fleet 5.  

        Recently, someone described it as a bit masochistic.  With so many things to do alone, without help or hinder, why subject oneself to so much to do?  Perhaps because of the same reason why people climb Mt Evert, or cross the oceans.. Because, it is there and because they can! In the Lonar, there are no excuses for other peoples mistakes only the resources one brings on this particular day can be relied upon. 

        It harkens to the American Philosopher and Writer, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on Self Reliance.

        So, while it is true we will all be sailing alone in tomorrow’s Lonar Race.. We will NOT be lonely.
         
         Each of us will be armed with our own version of self reliance; our sailing skills, knowledge of the lake, wind, boat, sails and rigging. So we will have plenty of companionship while we each try to out maneuver one another…
         
        In the end, there will be a winner the one person who get the hardware the coveted Lonar Trophy to place upon the mantel. But each of us will take away much more than any hardware could ever display.
         
        The self reliance that we have completed something alone with our friends together!
         
        Remember the tradition of each person bringing some form of libations to share afterwards.. It helps with the stories!!
