I got this back from Gene

old boats pre 350 are grandfathered as far as I am concerned unless it looks
like they moved the chainplates then I ask them to be as current plan

We may be off the hook on this one. I have one more question to ask. Don't
do anything yet.

Hi Ernest

I was reviewing the e-mail below.

Before I do work on the boat, did we get a definitive answer from Gene on
the chain plate issues.

As of the time this e-mail was sent it was still in question. As we
discussed yesterday this will impact 4 boats in the fleet.

These boats are all as manufactured.

Chain plates

Mark has made the jigs to do 5.1 and 5.3 of the measurement form. I believe
that Gene will say that 5.1 and 5.2 will be "it is what it is" because that
is the way the boat was built. He will probably say that 5.3, the shroud
templates must be in spec. How we will handle measuring the Seidelman boats
is a question because they are of different design.

Let's see what we've got and consult with Gene.

This email is primarily intended for owners, but crew should know what's
going on also so I am using the open forum provided by the list server.

The first thing to understand in dealing with measurers is that very often
things may not make sense to you and you ask "Why? That shouldn't make any
difference". The measurer's answer is "Because!" and it is left at that.
Sometimes there are measurements taken that I don't really understand the
purpose of but I have been told to take them so I do. As Tennyson wrote in
The Charge of the Light Brigade

            Theirs not to reason why

Theirs but to do and die

So on that note, I'll try to answer questions as best as I can but sometimes
the answer will be "Because!". So you can follow along, you can find the
Rule at
http://www.sonar.org/site/files/Library/Class_documents/Class%20Rules%20v1.1
2.pdf

The form is at

We have a very large range of boat types in our fleet. We have boats
representing all builders and boats which have been kept in a variety of
conditions. Most of us keep our boats very well and update parts of them.
We have to in order to be competitive.

The attached spread sheet shows what we must do. Black indicates a valid
certificate as far as I know. White indicates it must be measured. The
question marks on 391 are there because the website says that Peter Galloway
measured the mast at the 2007 NAs but no data was provided. Either we get
Galloway's data or we measure the mast. I'm not questioning whether it was
done or whether the mast is legal. It's just a case of filling in a gap.

We need to get started on this quickly because there will be questions on
some items and, perhaps, requests for variances. We are already getting
close to the NAs. I'm hoping to get all this done by Sept. 15.

I have discussed what I must measure with Gene Hinkel the International
Measurer. I have asked for some clarification but in general it goes
something like this.

Hulls and Keels

>From the Rule

E.3.5 DIMENSIONS

(a) Keels manufactured prior to March 1, 2000:

The keel shall conform to the tolerances in force at the time of
manufacture.

(b) Keels manufactured or altered on or after March 1, 2000: The keel shall
conform to the tolerances of Section H.

Mark's keel may have been worked on before he bought the boat but we don't
really whether that is the case, nor do we know when. So Gene has written
to me "I would wave a wand and ignore on all (modified keels) but Ontario
which started at 350." Gene has also told me that I needn't worry about
measuring keels before 650, which rules out 508 because it was built in the
early 90s.

The only boats we have that were built after 2000 are 757 and 822. Both
have certificates.

So we don't have to measure keels.

Rudders

Several boats have replaced rudders. Gene says that Ontario rudders are
legal. He may want me to measure the 3.1 which is the distance from the
rudder trailing edge to the HDP (transom edge). It is an "is what it is"
measurement because no one is going to be moving their rudder bearings. I
will follow Gene's instructions.

There is question about trailing edge thickness on rudders and keels. We
need a gauge and I could have John Koss make one if necessary. I am
awaiting instructions.

Masts and Booms

We will do entire mast and boom measurement according to Section 6 of the
measurement form.

Weight

We will weigh all boats per Section 7 of the measurement form. I doubt that
we're going to find light boats among the first three builders.

Boats such as 370 and 371 which have certificates have both had keel
stiffening work done. This changes the weight. 391 has question marks
because I need to know whether the weight done at 2007 NAs was done with the
current mast.

I've got a question to Gene about whether we weigh certificated boats and
whether we weigh for the NAs. On that line, I am asking whether we have to
weigh boats twice in the short time between measurement and the NAs. We'll
hear back.

So, let's get going. I am in town until Bert's boat lands in Elizabeth NJ
and then gone until about Aug 24. Call me and let's set up some times to do
masts and chain plates. We'll weigh in one weekend. Underweights are
handled by adding corrector weights.
