[Sonar] Texas Team Challenge 2012 & 2013

Hello fellow sailors!

The Wayzata Yacht Club had 11 team members travel down to the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club (www.tcyc.org<http://www.tcyc.org>) to compete against 5 other teams in Galveston Bay for the Texas Team Challenge (March 24-25, 2012). In attendance were Hans Dickel, Chandra Wobschall, Marty & Kathy Fossen, Brenda Gensch, John Pearson, Cheryl Schweiss, John Rainaldi, Tim Anto, Troy Neurauter, and Brett Thomas (MC sailor from MYC). Gary, Marty’s TX local cousin, also joined us.

The latest SCA newsletter (see below) had a nice write up about the event (and this information is available to all via http://www.sonar.org). Team WYC finished last overall (not winning a single race, although we almost won the last race when we threatened with a 1-3-6 or a 1-4-5, but finished with a 1-4-6… it was too close to tell on the race course for us). However, we had a fantastic time and there was much laughter, learning, and camaraderie.

The entire team arrived on Friday, we had lunch together, went out for a sail with 3 boats on Galveston Bay, then had dinner together as a team. On Saturday, all teams had dinner together at TCYC. After racing on Sunday, Team WYC went out to a “hole in the wall” where only cash could be used, and had some fantastic seafood (the Oysters were unbelievably good…) and other fare.

On the racing front, it was clear that the other teams had done a lot of preparation and were well-oiled machines. Rather than waiting until after the 2012 sailing season to build an ad-hoc team racing group, I want to start now with the excitement and commitment if there is enough interest. Here are my thoughts:

· Build a core team to practice regularly over the course of the sailing season

· Regularly practice against more experienced team racers that are not available to attend in 2013

· Regularly review rules and strategy over the course of practicing and in the off-season

· Watch team racing (recorded or in person, such as with UofMn events)

· Start developing patterns and plays based on our skill sets

· Work on various drills such as mark traps, slowing down competition, boat handling (slowing down, changing gears), attacking on starts, drawing competition coverage, etc.

· Have experienced team racers give presentations and have available for Q&A sessions

· Create consistent communication language that all team members can understand

If you are interested in helping build a team (A Squad) for 2013 (based on the previous two years, I would expect the racing dates to be similar as this year) this summer and attending the event in the spring, let me know. If you are interested in helping locally as a “competition” team (B Squad) to the A Squad, let me know. Either are great ways to increase you sailing skills, learn something new, and build the WYC Team. It is also just plain fun (just talk to someone who has done it). Note that 2 teams were turned away from attending the Texas Team Challenge this year. This is becoming a popular event and sport (relatively speaking).

Those that are part of the team (either Squad) will have access to GoogleDocs for Team Racing 2013. This will be the electronic repository of team racing information.

As a guideline for 2013, the 2012 expenses were as follows (for A Squad members):

· Airfare to IAH (Houston, TX)

· Car rental (We had 3 cars for 12 sailors, so split the cost accordingly – the cars were used throughout the time)

· Registration fee ($105/sailor if 12 members are present – this includes breakfast, lunches, and Saturday dinner)

· Housing cleanup fee (TCYC members generously let us stay in their residences) split across those that stay in a given house (we had two places this year)

Cheers!
Hans

MARBLEHEAD SONAR FLEET WINS THE TEXAS "SHOOTOUT" TEAM RACING TITLE:

Eleven Marblehead sailors travelled to the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club near Houston to defend its title in this year’s version of Texas Corinthian Yacht Club’s “Texas Shoot Out” Sonar team racing regatta.

Marblehead secured the win by going 10-0 over the course of the weekend in two races each against Texas Corinthian YC, Wayzata YC, Rochester YC, New York YC, and Noroton YC.

Ted Moore, Pete DeWolfe, Patrick Andreasen, Tim Guy, Tyler Doyle, Chris Boulter, Nyla Dubois, Larry Ehrhardt, Daan Goedkoop, Jeff Shoreman, and Charlie Pendleton sailed for Marblehead.

Saturday’s racing started late due to light winds giving the Marblehead Team a chance to enjoy the Veranda at the club and recover from Friday nights ride on the “Bullet” roller coaster after a large steak dinner. Once the wind came up the race committee was able to complete an entire round robin with the last race finishing just 15 minutes before dusk at 7:30 PM. The Marblehead team used a combination of good starts, boatspeed and little bit of team racing to go 5 – 0 on day 1.

Sunday’s conditions were slightly better with a moderate breeze allowing for another full round robin. The TCYC team was just behind the Marblehead team with a score of 4-1 after day one so the second match between these two teams would determine the outcome of the regatta. At the top mark, the Marblehead team had a tenuous lead with a 1,3,5 combination; however, after a good wing mark trap, some downwind pair balancing, and leeward mark trap, Marblehead had converted to a 1,2,3 and basically sealed the regatta win.

The regatta hosts (Chairman Tony Smythe), race committee (PRO Joel Scott), judges (chief judge Steve Shepstone), and the rest of the TCYC team did a fantastic job of running the regatta and is one of the highlights of the Sonar regatta calendar for the attendees.

The C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta:

The Notice of Race for the tenth annual C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta, scheduled for July 6-9, 2012, is now available online at www.clagettregatta.org<http://sonar.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=eaa28f8ff30564ec8a6fa266e&id=caefc8d0b3&e=53931e3197>. As North America’s premier event for sailors with disabilities, “The Clagett” is open to both U.S. and foreign competitors and will, this year especially, be an integral part of preparing athletes for the 2012 Paralympic Games when the event takes place at Sail Newport, Rhode Island’s community sailing center. Traditionally held in late-August, the move to July will facilitate additional athlete training prior to the Paralympic Regatta which takes place the first week of September in Weymouth, England. For the last two years, the singlehanded 2.4 Metre has been open to able-bodied sailors which doubled the number of competitors on the starting line. Starting with the 2012 event, able-bodied sailors may also compete in the three-person Sonar which will be raced with mainsail, jib and whisker poles. The inclusion of able-bodied competitors translates into stiffer competition which makes for the best possible training opportunity for the Paralympic competitors and also reinforces The Clagett’s mission of providing sailors with disabilities the opportunity to improve their skills and reach personal goals through coaching and competition.
