From Hans.Dickel at aeriden.com Thu Feb 2 12:39:51 2012 From: Hans.Dickel at aeriden.com (Hans Dickel) Date: Thu, 2 Feb 2012 18:39:51 +0000 Subject: [Sonar] Texas Team Racing Message-ID: Hello all! We are on the home stretch of putting together the WYC Team Racing group for racing March 24-25, 2012 in Galveston Texas, hosted by the Texas Corinthian Yacht Club (TCYC). This is my third time of attending team racing at TCYC. It is a fantastic venue, a great place to get a jump start on the sail racing season, offers great camaraderie with fellow WYC sailors on the same team, and makes all of us better racers. Even if you have little or no previous team racing experience, this is a great place to learn and add a whole new level of racing to your sailing resume. We have a few of spots available for sailors to join the team. If you would like to join the team, drop me a message. Team Members Hans Dickel Chandra Wobschall Millner Cheryl Schweiss Brenda Gensch Marty Fossen Kathy Fossen John Rainaldi Tim Anto John Pearson Most of us will fly in on Friday (March 23) and leave either later Sunday (March 25) or on Monday (March 26). You are responsible for your own flight (typically MSP to/from IAH) and transportation. However, I am happy to convey information to the team so carpooling can be done to/from the airport. The entry fee for the team is $1,250. This includes trophies, boat usage (and use of sails), breakfast, lunch, and Saturday dinner. This amounts to $105 per person if there are 12 team members (4 per boat), the maximum number. This is $139 if there are 9 team members, the minimum number. In the past, we have had a couple of places to stay that is equally inexpensive (often just a cleaning bill to split). In other words, it is a fantastic event, relatively low cost for what you get. Since all members must be club members of the WYC, I am asking that either you indicate you were a WYC member last year or you sign up ahead of time with the WYC this year. This is only fair to the WYC Sonar Fleet and a requirement for members of the team by the TCYC. Membership information is available via http://www.wyc.org/AboutWYC/JoinWYC.aspx. Here is what I need to know as part of your commitment: 1. Your current email address (in case you want me to use something else) 2. Your mobile phone number (helpful once in TX) 3. Your weight (this is to help planning teams across three boats) 4. If significant others are involved, indicate whether it is best to keep together, separate, or it doesn't matter 5. How you will reimburse me (in person or via mail) for the entry fee (my address is 867 Ravoux Circle, Chaska, MN 55318) 6. WYC membership level and year last registered Notes: By committing, you are agreeing to pay the entry fee. If you decide you cannot attend and we are able to make a complete team of 12 members, then I will reimburse your entry fee. Otherwise, it will not likely be reimbursed. Team members will gain access to Google Docs to share team racing information. Cheers! Cost: $18 Online, or $20 at the Door includes happy hour with pizza and beer Three semesters of Celestial Nav plus Navigation Charting in 2 hours. This will be a very high-level introduction with lots of pictures, minimal mathematics. See how spherical trigonometry works then step outside, weather permitting, and "shoot" Aldebaran (Taurus), Sirius (Canus Major), and Pollux (Gemini). Early arrivals might get a shot of Venus before it sets. Ideally, celestial navigators have 4 things: Sextant, Chronometer, Ephemeris (like the Nautical Almanac), and a Sight-Reduction method (I'll mention 5). Fortunately, there's a Free App for iPods, iPhones and iPads that does all of the above. Earlier today I chatted a bit with Bill Simon, who is cc'd above.? Bill races on Manhasset Bay?and is a VP International of the Sonar Class Association.? He is in the process of rebuilding the Sonar?Class?Association website (Sonar.org)? Bill would welcome any input you care to?offer?about the website - what you might like and dislike about the website in it's current form, what?you think?could be added?or changed to make it better.? Please drop Bill a note. ? I told?Bill about our fleet, our race program, our club, our lake.? In one form or another that information might get added to the Sonar.org site.??One possible approach?is for?our fleet page within the WYC.org?to simply get a link in the revamped?Sonar.org.? Being one of the avid team racers of our fleet, I asked to see more news and information about Sonar team racing on the new Sonar.org. ? Please support the SCA by renewing or getting your membership.? That support does ultimately make our?boats?more valuable as well as make our racing experiences better?even though we're so far away from the numerous Sonar fleets of the East coast.? ? By the way,?I and a few others are?seriously considering doing the trip to Rochester NY again for the NAs.? It's only about a 14 hour drive.? I can't help but wonder if we'll be able to see a number of Minnesota and Canada boats make the trip and represent strongly?the our club and midwest Sonar racing.? ? Finally, I think our team for the Texas Shoot out is still a couple short.? This event takes place March 24-25 on Galveston Bay.? It's a great time.? If you're at all interested in?going, please let Hans know. ? Thanks, Marty -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
