A lot of thought, communication, and analysis went into this decision. Too many to list here via my phone keyboard. 😆

On a more humorous note, MYC sailors already know their season will be reduced, and have started a radio control sailing fleet that allows social distancing while racing, something not possible on most real sailboats.

It’s a bigger comment on how we are all approaching this across the club.  There are a lot of unknowns when it’s week by week.

First, we hope this email finds you and yours doing well. You are all in our thoughts. Hans and I have been continuing to monitor worldwide developments in the COVID-19 pandemic, and its impact to regattas and economy.

We have been in communication with the Sonar Class Association (SCA) Board regarding the 2020 Sonar North American Regatta at Wayzata Yacht Club. The SCA Board and the Regatta Chairs understand the need for safety and large commitment of time, money and people resources it takes to host and participate in a North American regatta. This commitment is difficult for any of us at this point in time.

Combined with the reality that any return to normal racing will vary across the US, it is impossible to assure every class member a fair chance to prepare and commit to the Regatta, we have decided to cancel the Sonar North American Regatta for 2020. The SCA and WYC Boards have approved Sonar Fleet 5 hosting the Sonar North American Regatta in 2021 (pushing Sonar Worlds to 2022). Please complete the poll for Fleet approval<https://form.jotform.com/recursivegeek/na2021> to host and to indicate your commitment to volunteer for a key role in planning the event.
