This is a more detailed response to Glenn's email. But I am writing this for any Capri 25 sailor that would like to come and race this regatta (September 18-20, 2009). Also if you are ever in the Twin Cites area when the water is not hard, I will get you on a boat.

Options for racing a Capri 25 in the Star of the North Regatta:

The boats that do not do our one design fall regatta (Star of the North) tend to be at the back of the pack for our club races or their crew do not think that 9 races in 3 days is worth a day off of work or the grief they will get at home.

For the Capri Fleet, the event is open to any non-professional sailor (Dutch, I looked on the web site but did not find the details).

If you would like to Crew on a local boat, I am sure that I can find you a ride.

If you would like to Drive a local boat I know of three boat owners that would rather crew and call tactics then drive.

If you would like to Skipper a local boat I know of three boats where the owner does not want to do the Regatta but one or two of their regular crew does. The end result would be a mix of your crew and the regular crew from the boat (most WYC Capri's sail with 5 Crew so the 155 can be used in white caps, some with 6). The advantage is that there would be some local knowledge on the boat.

If you would like to charter a boat I am sure there will be Capri 25's available. But there are a few obstacles:

  1. Insurance for the boat (not the liability), there are many options here and I am far from an expert (if other have suggestions, please give them) but this was the toughest hurdle for me when I borrowed a boat for a regatta. If you own a boat you may be able to add borrowed boat insurance or the owner of the boat could add you to their policy. I am sure there are other option but it took me 4 weeks to work it out so get this handled first.

  2. Sails, our fleet has a one new sail a year limit for WYC boats (designed to keep the cost of racing down) so all boats are protective of their good sails especially the 155. So finding a boat to charter where you bring some of your own sails will be far easier. Also your sail are likely to be in better shape. On Consensus we finished 2nd in the 2008 regatta using a 6 year old 155.

  3. Even though for the past few years we have only had around 20 Capri 25's race in the regatta most of our 30 plus boats intend on doing it at the beginning of the season. As Fall rolls around life happens and boats drop out. 2008 there were at least 6 boats that were intending on doing the regatta two weeks before that did not. So It will be hard to know what boats are available in enough time to make it happen.

  4. It is not to say that a charter is undoable but right now it is clear as mud. Knowing that there is a team or teams wanting to charter a WYC Capri for the event is a good way to get some of the fence sitters to make an earlier decision. And hopefully if they decide not to race and are willing to lend their boat, there is enough time to make the other details happen.

Some time in the next 2 months the WYC Capri fleet will have its winter meeting. If you email me more detail on how you would like to participate I will get you on our agenda.

Wayzata Yacht Club has a written Policy for welcoming Guests (anyone who would like to race with us). Out of town racers tend to get special treatment, there are a few reasons for this:

  1. WYC members are proud of our club and like to show it off, hopefully getting positive feedback from an outside perspective.
  2. WYC is a club where sailing knowledge is freely shared, most believe that helping their competition become a better sailor ultimately makes themselves a better sailor. Having an out of town guest share their experience and abilities increase the knowledge base for the club.
  3. The WYC Capri 25 fleet is a bit inbred. Only a few WYC Capri 25's put their boat's on a trailer to go race other venues or events. The main reason is that they will race handicapped against a smaller fleet, why haul your boat when the racing is better in your back yard. Another is most WYC Capri owners are cheep... Relative to other one design fleets at WYC, few Capri sailors race other venues. If they do, they do it on other boats like Sonar's, S2 7.9's, J24's, J22's, scows or one of the 40-50 footers at our Apostle Island Station on Lake Superior. We are hungry for the perspectives that visitors bring us.

In summary, if you would like to come race with us you are always welcome. If you would like to come race the Star of the North Regatta we will do our best to make that happen. The more info on what you would like, the better. Something like:

I have been racing my Capri for 3 years in the Bay Area. 2 of my crew and myself would like to come to the Star of the North Regatta and crew for a WYC boat, We can do any job needed but are best at...

  Or

My hole crew and me would like to Charter a boat for the event. We will bring our own sails and need a tuff luff forestay. We used to race against Mark Weum when he had his Capri on Lake Dillon and look forward to beating him again.

  Or

It would be great to Charter a boat for the Star of the North Regatta, if one is available I can bring my whole crew. If not it will be just my fore decker and me. I would like the to drive in a 20 boat start and have my foredecker have the experience of a 9 boat overlapped pinwheel at the first leeward mark...

Of course it would be great if you brought your own boat. In 2004 we had 36 Capri 25's at the regatta. The boat that won it came from New York. They hauled their boat here just for the Regatta and hauled it back with the 1st place trophy having never won a race (consistently low numbers wins regatta's). Good thing the trophies are keepers.

I hope this helps anyone considering coming to the event. Feel free to Email me. I expect others in the fleet will add to this...

Hope to see you at WYC,

  Dan McNamara

  Glenn,

There are about 9 local boats that for different reasons choose not to do the Regatta. I am sure we can a find a boat that will be a good fit especially if your bring your Main, Genoa and Spinner. I will send another email shortly with the options as I see them.

I hope that you and others will join us.

We'll accept that challenge... are there any charter boats available, so as to save us the time of trailering 2000 miles from Los Angeles? If you can line us up a charter boat, than Team Suicidal Bird is there!

We choose to live here! We race at the best yacht club (Wayzata Yacht Club) on the best lake (Lake Minnetonka) with excellent race management and the best parties after EVERY race, 70+ races crammed into a short season (May to October).

I challenge all non-WYC Capri owners to hit the highway with your rig and come to the Star of the North Regatta at the WYC, September 18-20, 2009. We offer 9 races in 3 days, 20+ Capris on the starting line, great food, lots of rum, RED MOUNT GAY CAPS, music, a crane, a slip, free housing in private homes if requested, and a warm-up Thursday night club race (with our local fleet of 32 Capris) followed by a famous WYC Thursday night after-race party.

You've heard about it! Come experience it!

Yes, but can you carry a 6pack and a folding chair and walk over a lake, plop down, and fish through a hole? J

I agree. Its great to see everyone talking about backstays while the water is below two feet of ice.

          Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays and an exceptional New Year to all

My thoughts are: Here we are in the tundra cold air and snow on the ground and A whole bunch of sailors are talking back stay. AIN'T IT GREAT!

My best to all, one design or handicap. The Capri 25 (includes those who sail on one)is one of the best bang for the buck you can find.

          Happy sails to you

          Bill
