Hey 22 sailors,

Bert Foster caught up to me in the clubhouse and was very interested in the concept of a 2 race sunday.  Between Blake, Myself and Bert there was little consensus on how to make it work, but the positive was that there was interest in trying to make it happen.

Bert's suggestion was to allow the RC to make the call on the fly to have 2 races if the conditions warranted, perhaps even pulling the fleets into the bay to complete the second race.

Blake's idea was schedule 2 fleets (probably just the 1 design fleets) in a rotating order for a 2 race Sunday.  In other words, S2 7.9 and J24 get 2 races the first Sunday, J22 and Capri 25 get 2 races the second Sunday, Sonar/Ensign the 3rd Sunday, etc.  Until we get back around to the top of the order.  That way each fleet would get a few 2 race Sundays per season.  All fleets would still get atleast 1 race, and a couple fleets would get a bonus.

Working off of Blake's idea, to make it a little more time efficient, I was thinking that it would be good to move the fleets sceduled for 2 races into the top 2 starting positions.

A little more discussion that I had with Blake also got me thinking that it would be good to also understand what a "good" race course means.  I was commenting that I loved the 2 race format on Saturday mornings, however Blake mentioned that he often thought the quality of those race courses is compromised to try to squeeze in the 2 races.  Coming from a dinghy background, I personally love tight courses, starting lines, mark roundings and traffic management; I think sailing a windward leg and crossing near 2 boats the entire leg is boring.  However, I'm willing to conceed that some people might prefer to concentrate on boat mechanics and speed without the added pressure of potential collisions.  So, in thinking about how to make 2 race days work, also give some thought about what parts of the race course you like and how we can maximize those experiences for the majority of the boats.

If you have ideas on how to make the logistics work, please email them to me.  I will compile a list of ideas and schedule a meeting for later in the summer and we can draft a proposal to present to the board.

PS.  Sorry I didn't get to stick around yesterday to debrief on the race.  I would love to get everyone's perspective of what they saw.  It was a crazy mixed up day; not only were there 4 different race leaders, at several moments due to relative race positions, there were 3 different leaders of the entire Fleet 1 Combined Champ series.

Mike
