J/22 Fleet #1 2016 Season Recap

Hi Folks,

The 2016 J/22 racing season was one of the best in recent memory. 29 J/22's
raced this year on Lake Minnetonka! It’s great to see Fleet #1 going
through a resurgence in boats, drivers, crew, and interest in general.

Please read on for some *highlights*, *plans for next year*, and much
needed *thank-you’s*.

*Fleet Racing Highlights *

We continued to race the Combined Fleet Championship (CFC) with MYC hosting
Saturday races.

MYC will again host the Saturday racing next year. Bill, Tim & Kaye Siemers
on Team 643 won the CFC this year. In second place was Holly Jo Anderson on
#1048, MoXxie, and Mikey Bowers on #963 took 3rd.

Paul Lague and Jochen Koenig on #335 - “Knot Ready” - are our newest
members. They are in the process of upgrading their boat and sail plan, and
will be ready to race next year.

Russ Swansen on #724 - “Fill or Kill” - ramped up his program and competed
in many races. We hope to see more of Russ at regattas next year.

The Women's Team, with Julie, Lois, Janet and friends winning their first
championship race this year! Go MWST!

Rod Komis on #865 - “Old Skool” - moved up nicely to 2nd overall in the
Sunset Series. Rod gets better every season steering.

Randy Gould paced #521 - “Chilly Willie” - to some great races including
4th overall at the District Championship. He also is the winner of this
season’s “Gould Cup.” Ask Jane for more info if you dare.

The Wayzata Community Sailing Center (WCSC) has become a rich source of new
racers. We had many students and instructors sailing on J/22's, and not
just on Team MoXxie.

*Regattas On & Off Lake Minnetonka*

We invited the J/24 Fleet to again race with us at the Dave Cool Ice Breaker.
This was very popular, especially with the great Socials on Saturday night
and Sunday.

The ‘24’s reciprocated with inviting us to race our District Championship
at the UGotta Regatta. Everyone I heard from really had a great time both
on and off the race course. Bernie Soya’s Shrimp Boil was a big hit. We
plan to again combine our fleets at both events next season. Many thanks to
our Regatta Co-Chair, Julie Neal for making the UGotta/Districts a great
event!

Fleet #1 racers showed off their skills across the country this past
season. Kevin Kenny won the Annapolis J/22 NOOD Regatta, and was the Overall
NOOD Champion!!!

Jeff Hames and Kurt Taken-Holtze on Team 1318, along with Bill Siemers on
Team 643, raced in the Midwinter Championships in Fort Walton Beach, FL,
and both had very nice finishes.

Team 1209, with Brent Peterson, Jeff Cameron and Bill Rock, qualified and
raced in the US Sailing's Mallory Cup in San Francisco, CA.

Matt Thompson, Matt Carlson & Lars Hansen raced in the J/22 World
Championship in Kingston, Ontario.

We had 3 on-lake regattas with over 25 competitors and 3 different winners.
This demonstrates we have a very talented and deep fleet.

*Rumbles & Clinics*

Sunday Bay Rumbles continued to be very popular. We had 3 of them with
BBQ’s afterwords provided by our social director, Jill Fynboh.

At the June Rumble, Jon Noller and Rod Komis put on an outstanding
boat-handling clinic for crew.

*Socials*

As mentioned above, Jill Fynboh was kind enough to put socials together for
each of the Rumbles. She also organized the Dave Cool Ice Breaker Socials
and the Spring Social at Lyn Lake Brewery. We are very fortunate to have
her provide these. They are a lot of work and they really make our events
pretty awesome. Please thank her when you get a chance.

2017 Winter/Spring Social

Plans are in the works for a Social late winter or early spring. We are
hoping to expand last year’s Social to include more time for socializing,
watch a photo slide show, hold a fleet meeting and have a trophy
presentation for Fleet #1 events. Jill Fynboh will be have details for us
come the new year.

*2017 Season & Beyond *

Current J/22 World Champion, and North Sails Pro, Mike Marshall will be at
WYC for a J/22 Racing Clinic. We hope to combine with the June Rumble. Mike
may also offer private instruction on the Friday prior to the clinic. Jeff
Cameron is organizing this, and will have details at our Winter/Spring
Social.

Jeff is also developing plans for WYC/Fleet #1 to host the 2018 US
Sailing's Mallory Cup, to be raced on J/22's. If you are able to volunteer,
or loan out your boat, please contact Jeff at <cameron at bipl.net>.

Finally, Jeff is exploring having WYC/Fleet #1 host the 2019 J/22 North
Americans. If you are interested in more information, please contact Jeff.

*Special Thanks to Our Volunteers*

Jeff Cameron, in addition to all the above clinics and and events he is
planning, also designed, ordered and distributed over 150 Fleet #1
t-shirts! He also made a financial donation to make this affordable for all
of us. The shirts look great, and really do a nice job of branding and
promoting our fleet at WYC. Many, many thanks go out to Jeff!

Holly Jo Anderson took on the role of the J/22 USA Class Regional
Representative, maintains the fleet’s web page and Facebook page. She also
publishes all the fleet communications.

Paul & Suzy Cossette at Lyn-Lake Brewery provided outstanding craft beer
for several events.

Jeff Hames and The Print Shop donated the awesome cooler trophies for the
Dave Cool Ice Breaker.

Finally, many of our racers volunteer as members of a leadership circle,
that manages our fleet’s operations. There is a lot that goes on backstage
to make our racing happen. I’d like to recognize: Bob Leach, Lars Hansen,
Mike Miller, Mikey Bowers, Kevin Kenny, Jill Fynboh, and Julie Neal for all
their help this year.

One last note of thanks to Kevin Kenny. Without Kevin, the fleet and the
club would come to a grinding halt. The jobs he willingly takes on and
performs to perfection, are too numerous to list. We all owe him a debt of
gratitude.
