Chad,

The Sunset trophy replacement (repurposed Community Regatta) has limited space (photo below) so planning to start with 2017. I recall a time before there was a Sunset – not sure when it was invented. Since the Champ was the best of Sundays (A, B, C), I understood Sunset was the best of Thursdays (G, T, M) but John explains it’s just G & T. Clearly I don’t know what I’m doing so help appreciated.

For the G, T, and M replacements, a plate is appropriate since at least one of the missing trophies was reportedly a plate. I will order 10” plates at fleet expense. These had been described as “anodized aluminum” but site now says silverplate and stainless. I called 781-631-2500 and spoke to Ray who told me they are silverplate with an engrave-able colored “disk” of either nickel over brass or aluminum (not anodized). He recently bought the business from Ken (who may have used anodized aluminum, but Ray says that doesn’t engrave as well). Explains why the links/descriptions changed. They work with over 400 yacht clubs and have J/22 artwork on file.

I told him we plan to use this as a traveler, and he said a local engraver could add annual winners around the perimeter. Since that will be done at a later time, your input is timely, but I’m not clear which trophies Lets Boogie and 1481 won for which years in 2009-2011. Perhaps you could mark up the enclosed?

The two questions remain:

1. what to engrave in the center of the plate (besides the J/22 outline). John has a committee working that so I’m confident we’ll have an answer in the next few years ;-)

2. who were the historical winners?

I’ve done my best to compile stats, working from old logbooks and the club’s historical scans of the banquet programs (2005-2008)<http://www.wyc.org/Racing/Results/Historical.aspx>, but records are incomplete and contradictory. My Excel spreadsheet (enclosed with Thursdays excerpted below) is what I have. Additional help appreciated so I’m copying the list for input. Failing that, I’ll go with what I got (warts and all) starting in 2009 (earliest year with complete-ish records).

John,
Can we do something about the missing Commodore Cup trophy as well?

I won it in 2014 but, when it didn’t show up at the banquet, assumed it never existed. I’ve since learned otherwise.

Craig
In 2009 Gary and I purchased the Lets boogie and sailed from 2009-2011. In 2012 Gary and I purchased 1481 and sailed it to current. Gary and I are partners in the boat and Monson is crew. All 3 of us are full members and have always been. Not sure why the results have Monson's name on them but I didn't change it until last year. (always nice to have good crew get some recognition)
Can you show the results from 2009-2011 Lets Boogie Christensen Olness
and for 1481 results can you show Hurricane Christensen Olness
You can ask Monson if you need confirmation.

Hopefully it is not too late. Thanks again for all your work!
If you need any money for any of this let me know.
Thanks
Chad

Subject: Update: J22 G, T, M and Sunset Series Trophies

Hi Chad, Jon and Gary,

Am happy to report Craig Smith is ordering new trophies for the G, T, and M Series. These will replace the ones that have been lost. In addition, he is refurbishing and repurposing a beautiful clock, and wood base, to replace the lost Sunset Series travelling trophy. He expects to have all 4 trophies engraved back as far as he has dependable records, and be done in time for the 2017 fall banquet.

We should all recognize the considerable time and effort Craig has put into this; if you get a moment to thank him, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks again for bringing the missing trophy issue to my attention, as well as your patience in waiting for a proper resolution.

If there is anything else I can do, please let me know.

Best,

John

Hi Craig and Beth,

Let's pass on adding names to the G, T & M Series. As such, that should allow you more time to prepare these for the fall banquet.

Please let me know if you need help, or seed money from the fleet treasury, to move forward.

Thanks again for your effort with this. We will certainly do a better job or shepherding these trophies in the future.

Best,

John

1. Not really a donation but a re-purposing. Chris Nimmer gave me 5 old clocks from regattas that are no longer sailed (Community, ADA, etc). Only 2 still working – they keep excellent time chime ships bells on the hour (can be switched off). I’m restoring the other 3 at club expense. Plan to let club pay for J/22 engraving in consideration of the YEARS our fleet had nothing to engrave upon.
Club paying for engraving works for the fleet. Thanks for making that happen.
2. Thanks for clarification. Thinking about this more, doesn’t Sunset include the M series? Since that’s not yet complete, how do we know who the Sunset winner is? Guessing Jeff Hames & Kurt Taken-Holtze have it mathematically “locked up” so pending M results cannot make a difference to Sunset?
Sunset is only G & T.
3. I will order the 10” but need to know what new text to add (Cool? Hansen? Etc?) Thinking we’ll get perimeter engraved locally. 10” will provide more room for that, but how far back do you want to go? My spreadsheet (enclosed) has gaps prior to 2009 and has yet to be independently verified for accuracy.

Working on it. Draft is for: Hansen, Kabris and Allen. Dave Cool already has an event, so am thinking of getting recognition for others.
4. Since Beth and I are relatively new to fleet, glad to defer to the more senior members.
Copy that. I'm a bit in the same era: late to the dance, so to speak.

John

Hi Craig,

1. Thanks for your generous donation; it is much appreciated.

2. Yes to: 2017 - Hames/Taken-Holtze - Turn Down for What. That said, we should be consistent with the naming protocol as exists on other trophies. This then would be: "2017 - Jeff Hames & Kurt Taken-Holtze". You would be the expert in the naming/engraving protocol area. What are your thoughts and/or recommendations?

3. I prefer the 10" plate. You? How there be room have back-dated engravings? You indicated that we can "engrave perimeter with historical winners." Can the supplier do this, and can Minnesota Trophies in Hopkins continue the engraving in the future?

4. I'll get the fleet possy together to come up with club member names. Do you and Beth have a recommendation?

Thanks again Craig.

Let's with your ideas for the G, T & M as well Craig.

I would like to honor racers who made the fleet what it is, and thereby personalize the trophies. What are your thoughts?

If you agree, I can get a small committee together and kick names around in time to get this comfortably done before the banquest.

Thank you so much for taking care of this onerous and overdue task!

Now, regarding replacing the missing G and T, as well as M, and Commodore, I still like the enclosed for $25-55, but recall you found something even better, and wanted to rededicate them to “racers who have made significant contributions to the J/22 fleet. For example, the Hansen Series, the Allen Series, the Kabris.”

Thanks for being fleet captain. You’re the best!

I could take to MN Trophies in Hopkins to replace the brass plaques. Commodore says that would be at fleet expense. Could use some woodwork refinishing first, but not sure where to get that done.

Ernie,

I contact Chelsea regarding the ShipStike clocks. The clocks are valuable, but the repair estimate seems high. I’ll see if a local jeweler can repair or replace the movement &/or entire face & hands. Expect that would be without the ship bell’s sound.

Two of the 5 clocks have been keeping excellent time, so I would like to repurpose them. I offered one to Rudy but he already has a traveler for the Fleet Challenge (aka Rudy Race). Perhaps one could be used for the Night Race? Expect I can get the brass engravings redone well before October.

Hello Craig

The generation of movements in your clocks has not been used since 2001 and they used to have a synthesized bell sound that came through a speaker. That assembly is no longer available. The current generation of the assembly has an electro mechanical bell attached to the back of the assembly and the dial and hands are integrated to it so none of your current assembly could be used. The approximate cost of this assembly is $280 and is currently unavailable until mid- September 2017. The case of the clock sometimes requires modification so the clock is re fitted with the new generation assembly which we do not charge to do the re fitting only the cost of the movement. If the movements are not installed at our facility they would be sold no warranty, no return and may not fit right out of the package. If the clocks are sent in and the movements are re fitted into the cases the approximate cost is the same $280 but you get a 2 year warranty on the work done just like the clock has on it when it is new. In the event you were wondering what the clock sells for new the answer is $850. If you decide to send the clock or clocks to us you may do so by following the shipping instructions on our website www.chelseaclock.com<https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.chelseaclock.com&data=02%7C01%7Ccraig.a.smith%40honeywell.com%7C8df744384ec44f576c1a08d4e40c319a%7C96ece5269c7d48b08daf8b93c90a5d18%7C0%7C0%7C636384188413228426&sdata=Zyrzf7lvPbNPaFTMZeSuKmkSlJegtvH6W9NxX5RMBoc%3D&reserved=0>. You would also include a copy of the repair request form that you submitted. Once the clocks arrive at our facility they would be looked over to determine if the movements do require replacement and if so the quote or quotes would be sent to you within 10 days of their arrivals to our facility and we would ask that when you received the quotes to look them over and contact us at the telephone number that appears on the quote or quotes to inform us of what you have decided to do. As we mentioned earlier in the email the movements are currently on back order until mid – September 2017. If you decide to send the clock or clocks to us for the refit we will look forward to doing it or them for you.

Thank You

Dear Customer Service

Just to clarify, I have 3 of these where only the second hand moves (2 more still working fine).
I am not planning to send anything. Rather, I am asking for the price of a replacement movement.
It is made of black plastic, appears to be inexpensive, and is labeled:

HERMLE
Quartz 2117
Germany (GE)
Unadjusted

as shown in the photo. However, your web site complained my photo was too big, so I had to shrink until, I’m afraid, that information may no longer be legible.

The clock face is actually 4 & 6/8” – expect I could reuse face and hands, speaker, and battery holder, but any replacements would have to fit my existing brass case.

John,

According to Dallas,

> The J22 fleet has lost so many trophies over the years I think the board decided to stop replacing them. That discussion was my first introduction into the ownership of trophies history.

Dave Cool lost a bunch of trophies. Took them with him when he passed away. You could ask him, but...

That's the conversation I was referring to in my "PS" comments. Jappa and I gave up looking. Lars was the only person winning trophies back then and he didn't care, so we gave up. I think I replaced one of the trophies out of my pocket, I can't remember anymore.

John,

Bowers reported, and I confirmed, the A-Series trophy was on the clubhouse shelf earlier this year.

The enclosed photo (from 2014) shows it engraved for that year. I’m asking the Commodore to add last year’s Thursday winners to the front of the program (would help people like Bill track down his hardware).

Regarding the missing Thursday trophies, assuming you saw my Sept 12 post to the J22 winners of yesteryear.

Hi John!

I never actually got the trophy for 2015. I remember Craiggae was looking for it earlier this year, does he maybe have it?

Also I apologize for the slow response but I've been up north away from the Internet, did you still need help picking up trophies at the yacht club?

John,

Did they ever exist? Can you describe them? Did Chad respond? (not to me).

I’ve documented nine J22 trophies known to exist (photos of 8 enclosed, 1 pending) with descriptions, 2015 winners, status, and 2014 winners (from back of last year’s logbook).

I spoke to Munson last night: he thinks G &/or T was a plate. All should be found or replaced along with M, and Commodore.

Please confirm you have the C and Champ trophies.

I will attempted to contact previous winners but may need help (I’ve thrown out my old logbooks, and the web site only goes back to 2012).
I can confirm 444 never saw the Commodore trophy for 2014. If I knew it existed, I would have tracked it down then!

Angela Johnson, Uta Moncur, Terry Foster, and Cha Olness confirmed they do not have these trophies.
I cannot find a response from you.

Hi Craig,

Might you have the J/22 "A Series" trophy in your possession?

Hi John!

I never actually got the trophy for 2015. I remember Craiggae was looking for it earlier this year, does he maybe have it?

Also I apologize for the slow response but I've been up north away from the Internet, did you still need help picking up trophies at the yacht club?

Hi Bill and Paul,
You are the 2015 recipients of the A and B Series traveling trophies, respectively. Congra tulations once again on winning those series.
Now is the time, however, to have your travelling trophy cleaned, engraved, and dropped off at the club. The Fall Banquet is coming up Nov. 15, so please plan accordingly.
For free engraving, bring the trophy to the WYC vendor:

Please confirm that you received this email & that you have the trophy. Several have gone missing, and there is a high sense of urgency that they be accounted for.

Thanks.
