J24 Sailors,

Marty Fossen from the Sonar fleet asked me to pass this on. He's not sure which one of us he came close to on Saturday, but he wanted to be sure his apology got through to them. I'd say this is a commendable email by Marty.

Tom

Subject: regrets about last Saturdays racing

Tom,

I writing to you because you're noted as the fleet captain for the J24 fleet. As your fleet was doing one of the U-gotta races, our commodore cup race sent us through your course at a very bad time. The situation really sucked. I feel bad about what happened.

Just as the wind came up into the 20s, we (Sonar 391) were beam reaching and tried to pick a line that could get us between numerous J24s under spinnaker. Unfortunately one of your boats had to try to go lower to get around us. As they did so, their spinnaker got too far to the windward side and it pulled them into a bad wipe out. I don't know how they recovered because I had to focus on getting clear of other J24s. It's hard to say how things would have evolved had I steered higher or lower thirty seconds before the wipeout. Probably better.

I would like you to know that I wasn't choosing my course with lack of regard for you all. Short of entirely leaving our race, I was trying to go up and down to stay out of the way of the J24s. In hind-sight, perhaps I should have left our race to better avoid yours.

I hope that the U-gotta event, as a whole, went well and everyone came off the lake with out serious damage. Please relay my regrets and my apology to your fleet.

Thanks,
Marty Fossen
