U.S. J/24 Class Association Update

John Mollicone Gains Victory at J/24 Midwinter Championship

   MW 2013 <http://ih.constantcontact.com/fs145/1107531849066/img/57.jpg>

John Mollicone from Newport, RI and his Helly Hansen team triumphed as 2013
J/24 Midwinter Champions. With Tim Healy, Geoff Becker, Dan Rabin and Gordon
Borges, the group was able to spectate the last of the 10-race series to
allow the other 19 teams to duke out the remaining places. Dropping the DNS,
Mollicone ended the three-day event at Davis Island Yacht Club in Tampa, FL
with 21 points and a line of 8,3,1,1,2,2,1,2,1. Will Welles helmed Cougar to
an impressive series and 26 points for second place. Peter Bream's Team
Tarheel notched 43 points for third.

Team Helly Hansen seized the lead after five races on the opening day of the
Midwinters on February 11. Beautiful conditions allowed the abundance of
racing when Mollicone started with an 8, but then lodged a line of 3,1,1,2
for 7 total points, dropping his worst score after race five. Under sunny
skies and temperatures near 80 degrees, winds began at 6-8 knots for the
first three races. Mike Ingham got things started with a victory in the
initial bout, Welles snagged the top spot in race two, and Mollicone claimed
first in race three. By race four, the breeze built to a gorgeous 12-15
knots. Mollicone excelled and won that contest, and the day closed out with
Bream triumphing.

Mollicone fortified his lead in Tuesday's three races, tallying just 12
total points in the eight races to that point (dropping that 8 in race one,
leaving scores of 3,1,1,2,2,1,2). The 20 teams were postponed in the morning
due to lack of wind, but the seabreeze was worth the wait when it kicked in
at 14-16 knots with puffs around 18. Welles raced Cougar to first in that
day's initial race. Mollicone snared the top spot in the next, while Bream
continued a great day by winning the final contest.

Conditions in sunny Tampa Bay remained gorgeous on the final day of the
event, with breeze between 14-16 knots and puffs to 18. Mollicone praised
the "champagne sailing conditions" as the best he's ever seen there. On the
heels of winning last November's J/24 North American Championship, Mollicone
thanked his consistent team, saying "We've got a good team, but the biggest
thing is we've got the same people all the time, and it makes a big
difference in our crew mechanics and communication." The group put in some
practice time and training before the event which "helped a lot with getting
comfortable again on the J/24 after taking some time off," Mollicone
explained. His dependable group will be heading to Howth, Ireland in August
for the J/24 World Championship, but he'll turn over the helm to Tim Healy.
"We'll just switch roles, and then next year I'll drive in Newport (for the
2014 J/24 Worlds)," shared Mollicone.

In the final two races, Mollicone and Tony Parker took the bullets. The top
six overall: John Mollicone (21 points), Will Welles (26), Peter Bream (43),
Mike Ingham (44), Tony Parker (47), Travis Odenbach (47). Check out daily
photos on the J/24 Class Facebook page, and complete results are available

>From St. Pete to the BVI

One of the oldest boats, in one of the most storied classes, took home
overall winner honors at the 2013 Sperry Top-Sider St. Petersburg NOOD
Regatta. Local Robby Brown dominated the 15-boat J/24 class, winning seven
of 11 races. By virtue of the impressive win over some top competition,
Brown, whose boat USA 799 first touched water 35 years ago, was selected as
the overall winner for the regatta. That honor includes a trip to the
British Virgin Islands in November, where Brown and his crew will get a
chance to battle for national bragging rights in identical Sunsail 44i's
against the overall winners from the other five Sperry Top-Sider NOOD
Regattas. Unseasonably cool conditions dominated the 16th edition of the
Sperry Top-Sider St. Pete NOOD. But with the cool weather came breeze, and
sailors generally prefer wind and cool weather to balmy temps and glassy
seas. Those who braved the wind chill on Tampa Bay last Friday through
Sunday were rewarded with near perfect racing conditions, which enabled the
race officials to run up to 11 races for each of the nine classes. Behind
Brown and his 20 points were David Ogden's Clear Air (36 points) and Travis
Odenbach's Honey Badger (38 points). For more information on the 2013 Sperry

Easter Regatta awarded qualifying spot for the 2014 J/24 World Championship

The 2013 J/24 Easter Regatta hosted by Columbia Sailing Club and J/24 Fleet
67 will be held Easter weekend March 28-31. Currently there are 16 boats
from 9 states registered with more adding each week. The 2013 J/24 Easter
Regatta has been awarded a qualifying spot for the 2014 J/24 World
Championship in Newport, Rhode Island, and with a few of the top boats
already qualified this is your chance to make it to the big stage.

This three-day event provides some great fresh water racing with boats from
all over the east coast of the United States and Canada. Past fleet sizes
have topped 40 boats with sometimes as many as 10+ races. Current entry fee
is $300 and includes racing, launch and haul, dockage, meals, entertainment,
drinks and more. There are low cost lodging options that include under $85
hotel rooms, lake front house rentals and onsite camping.

The Easter Regatta value is about as good as it can get. For more
information, visit the event website: www.j24easterregatta.org

Fleets Meet on the Slopes

On Ground Hogs Day and Super Bowl Weekend, members of three J/24 fleets and
two districts got together to hit the slopes. The idea was formulated during
the Downeast Regatta last September and thanks to some dedicated folks, took
place at Loon Mountain on February 2-3.

Friday night, sailors from Falmouth, Marion and Newport enjoyed extra large
burgers and beers at the Woodstock Station Brewery. While listening to some
live music, some shied away from a hungry-looking, under-stuffed bear.
Saturday, most hit the slopes at Loon Mountain, enjoying great lessons,
first gondola rides, icy patches and snowy patches. Skiers and non-skiers
met up at the Summit Cafe for a noon-time snack. At the end of the day, many
were ready to hit the pool or the pub to unwind. Saturday night, the
Sudofsky family opened their home for a chili and pulled-pork potluck. It is
safe to say, good times were had by all. Those who weren't too tired out hit
the slopes for incredible conditions on Sunday.

We are hoping to make this an annual event and get more people involved. It
was a great opportunity to get to know people that you only see during
regattas, when we are usually distracted by sailing. Keep your eyes peeled
for news on next year's event!

US National Championship Hosted at: Wayzata Yacht Club, Wayzata, MN

J/24 Fleet #1 is proud to announce that the 2013 J/24 US National
Championship will be held on Lake Minnetonka, June 20-23, 2013. Lake
Minnetonka is well known for competitive sailboat racing, challenging wind
shifts and spectacular vistas - the perfect setting for racing J/24s. The
entry fee includes racing as well as dinners and entertainment and beverages
throughout the regatta. The Wayzata Yacht Club and the neighboring
Minnetonka Yacht Club have a strong one-design mentality, and Lake
Minnetonka has a long history of highly competitive sailboat racing. These
two core attributes helped create the first J/24 fleet. Stay informed, visit

The 2013 NA and 2014 World Championship Regatta Committee is hard at work
putting together two spectacular J/24 regattas. First up is the J/24 North
Americans which will be a great tune-up for the Worlds and a wonderful
four-day regatta in beautiful Newport, Rhode Island. The dates of the North
Americans are Thursday, September 19 through Sunday the 22nd, 2013, and are
hosted by Fleet 50 and Sail Newport. Expert PRO Anderson Reggio and the crew
of Sail Newport will be providing four days of great racing that could take
place in Narragansett Bay and/or Rhode Island Sound. Both locations provide
open water venues with excellent wind and even current. The official Notice
of Race, schedule, contact info and online registration has all been posted

Fast becoming one of the most well-attended events in North America, the
Downeast Regatta provides two days of great racing on Casco Bay near
Portland, Maine. Hosted by J/24 Fleet 43 and the Portland Yacht Club, the
Downeast Regatta had 29 boats in 2012 and 45 boats in 2011. The 2013 event
is a perfect tune-up regatta for anyone coming to the North American
Championship in Newport, RI as it takes place two weeks before on September
7-8. The Portland Yacht Club in Falmouth, Maine is an easy three and a half
hour drive with your boat to Sail Newport. Fleet 43 will be offering free
storage of your boat before and after the Downeast Regatta to anyone who is
attending the North Americans. As in the past, free housing is offered by
Fleet 43 members (they housed over 15 boats for free the last two years)
which makes this event very economical. The free housing is offered on a
first come first serve basis to boats that are registered and have requested
housing. A low all-inclusive early entry fee of just $225 between now and
March 1, 2013 includes a traditional Maine lobster bake for 5, live
entertainment, free beverages all weekend, chili and munchies on Friday and
BBQ dinner on Sunday during haul-out, breakfast Saturday and Sunday as well
as launch and haul and mooring for your boat. To learn more go to
