Re: Race Preparation May Include an Extra Set of Boots!

Friends and Fellow Sailors:

It has been quite a long winter and finally the sailing season is HERE!
Boats are being launched, we have had great turnouts for our spring
training events, and we hear a lot of talk of excitement to get the racing
season started. Thursday night will be our first race in the G Series – a
LONG anticipated event.

There are a couple items we would like to alert you of when returning to
the club Thursday as part of your pre-race preparation.
Our Pre-Race Program – Access and Parking

As you all may know, we are getting ready for major construction along
Eastman Lane later this summer. Road and utility construction has not
started yet. We expect this activity to begin early July so your drive
should look the same until then. We do have one issue to contend with and
it relates to the East Parking Lot. We experienced some unforeseen
construction activity in the lot about 3 weeks ago and we want you all to
be prepared for a bit of a mess if you intend to park in the upper lot area.
A Brief History

During this winter, we were asked to provide parking to the contractors
working on the Presbyterian Homes Project just west of us to free up street
parking during working hours. What occurred a few weeks ago was one of the
contractors took it upon themselves to dump up to 3 feet of fill in the
upper East Parking Lot in an effort of “betterment” while they used our lot
for their staff and sub contractors. We were never asked if we wanted the
upper lot filled, nor was there any intention of the WYC to take this type
of action in such a manner. To further the problem, the material used by
the contractor was not suitable or appropriate for a parking surface, nor
did it meet the vegetated surface requirement as defined in our recently
approved Plan Unit Development (PUD) with the City. So with this, we
instructed the Contractor to immediately remove the material so that it
would be ready for your use this Thursday. It was proposed by WYC and the
City that the contractors remediate the damaged areas with crushed granite
as a temporary fix. This type of surface is similar to what is currently
used in the West Parking Lot and a viable solution until we were ready to
reseed and return it to grass at the end of our sailing season. All
parties, the City, the two contractors using the lot and the WYC knew that
these actions needed to be expeditious to meet the schedule and have the
surface ready for our membership. We and the City of Wayzata acted
immediately with options for a solution; the Contractors, well… not so
much. They removed the material over the last two weeks and in doing so,
removed the stabilized grass surface. We expected that the crushed granite
would have been installed by now, as there was plenty of time to complete
this task. Of course, due to expense, we have received push back from the
contractors to perform this critical step.

We continue to work to the determined solution and have gone as far as to
employ legal assistance to add a bit of gravity to the need, to expedite
the process and to delineate the consequences. Our agreement with the
contractors clearly identify that the parking lot will be maintained during
its use and would be returned to their original state at the expiration of
the lease.

I want to reiterate that no one from the WYC or the City instructed this
action, nor would we have ever anticipated that someone would voluntarily
dump tens of dozens of truckloads of pit-run on our land without a request.
To say that this is an odd and unforeseen situation is an understatement
and all extremely unfortunate for the club and our community partners.

So in short, please be prepared that the upper lot may be a bit muddy,
especially with all the recent precipitation. It is currently drivable, but
is very slippery so please take caution. If you are looking for other
options, there are two municipal parking areas on Mill Street just west of
the “Muni.”
A Couple Small Reminders

   - Because of all of this, parking may be tight. Please have your parking
sticker prominently displayed to gain access to the Parking Lots. We will
have attendants available to get you parked as efficiently as possible.
   - Please refrain from parking in the neighborhood or in front of retail
businesses at the neighboring shopping center.
   - Please consider carpooling or biking in from remote parking for
   Thursday night races.

For the convenience of those who have wash up needs for their footwear,
Steve Bren has volunteered to set up an on-site shoe washing station for
those who do get a little muddy. We appreciate his efforts to make this as
convenient as possible.

So bring an extra pair of boots and your racing spirit Thursday. With all
of this going on, it will be good to hear the sounds of flogging sails and
a starting gun after all this pre-race prep!

Cordially,

Wayzata Yacht Club

Randy Gould, Commodore
