[Sonar] Water in Rudder question

I'll just add the following:

My rudder has always had water in it; you can hear it slosh back and forth
when you turn the rudder upside down. Unlike Mark's, though, the water is
not cooperative enough to drain out along the post in the up upside down
position. Just a few tablespoons leak back out, but in the spring, you can
still hear the water inside.

I asked Hooper Yachts what they could do, and they suggested all kinds of
stuff, adding up to about $800. I declined, since I think a new rudder as
about $900. I think somebody in the fleet has had the Hooper treatment
though; maybe Encore?

I think I may be visiting Stosh this winter.

I think he drilled a hole and drained it over the winter. Then he sealed
the hole and sealed around the post. I don't think I have any other cracks
but I know that it is a two piece shell construction. I think that yours
has foam inside. I don't know what to do if that foam is soaked.

If I ever take my boat to have work done, I would certainly take it to
Stosh. However, doing the simpler repairs myself is part of the
entertainment value of boat ownership for me. Lucky for me there are
lots of things to be fixed.

Did he seal the outside surfaces, or is there a plug of some sort down
at the bottom of the tube?

Thanks for the information.

Mark
