[Phrf] rig maintenance!

 Hey PHRFers,

In case you didn't sail yesterday, another WYC boat lost its mast. Sailing
in relatively benign conditions (15 knts) a Sonar mast broke at the
spreaders. Happily no one was hurt.

What does this has to do with PHRF?? We have been losing masts lately due
not just to rigging failures, but rigging MAINTENANCE failures. AFAICT this
was boat the same; the port cap shroud let go when the pin came out of the
chainplate. This could have been SO easily prevented with an inspection.

Today I walked down the A dock and found a half dozen boats with rigging
maintenance misdemeanors of various forms and levels of seriousness. All of
them could lead to rig failure. I REALLY SUGGEST that you inspect your
rigging before the next time you go out, and on a regular basis (1-2 weeks
after that). We look at BlueJs before every race.

Have questions? Need help? Drop me a note and I'll walk around with you and
point out things to tidy up, and watch out for. Lets keep out masts up! ;^)
