Dear Carmen,
Extend your sailing season by adding to your skill sets with one of our ashore classes. Coastal Navigation will be offered at both Shorewood Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka and Wind Mill Marina in Afton, MN. Read the brief descriptions and follow the links to get more information. We look forward to seeing you at these fine nautical locations! Both Coastal Navigation and Marine Weather can be completed from home for those who live outside the Twin Cities area.
Fall Ashore Classes
Marlinspike Seamanship Mr. Tim Carlson, Seven Seas, has been specializing in marlinspike seamanship for over ten years. He takes great pride in sharing the right way to do things whether it is a simple three strand splice or some of the most useful knots in sailing. We provide you with a great textbook, working line an enthusiastic instructor and more. Whether you want to make a built-in handle at the end of a water bucket, lash oars or other deck gear in place, attach a foot of a sail to a boom, or even extend a towing line, this course will prepare you with the right seamanship tools.
Become the “go to” person on your boat when it comes to marlinspike seamanship.  You'll learn it in this course along with types of rope, splicing, cleats, winches and purchase.
Prerequisites: None
Coastal Navigation (ASA 105) We use the official American Sailing Association (ASA) textbook and accompanying PowerPoint CD edited by Captain Thom Burns, Northern Breezes. Thom does seminars on the subject at both the Strictly Sail, Chicago and the Minneapolis Boat Shows. Captain Burns will be teaching the Tuesday class while Captain Tom Igielski will teach the Afton class and Captain Scott Sandberg will teach the Lake Minnetonka Saturday class. “Captain Thom Burns thoroughly knows this topic and tells memorable stories about salient points to the delight of the class,” Peggy A.
Learn the navigational theory and practical skills required to safely pilot a sailing vessel in coastal or inland waters. Learn how to take this solid foundation and integrate it into sensible, practical applications of GPS usage. This is a tool which is directly responsible for up to 25% of all groundings according to the Boat U.S. Seaworthy Magazine, which compiles data from the boating insurance industry. Students progress from dead reckoning to more complex piloting while incorporating tides, current, leeway, GPS and a brush of radar. Thom will visit each class and show you the latest in technology on IPad2, Droid, Laptop Computers and handheld GPS units. Learn from the editors while earning American Sailing Association certification.
Prerequisites: None
Marine Weather (ASA 119) Captain Tony Green does seminars on the subject at the Minneapolis Boat Show. Tony received rave reviews for the Marine Weather course. “This was the most thorough, complete and valuable course on marine weather I’ve ever seen or taken,” Captain Sue E. This time Captain Scott Sandberg and Captain Tony Green are teaming up for the class.
Anyone who ventures onto the water should do it with weather confidence and weather strategies. This weather course is highly beneficial.
Weather is a vast subject with many facets, but when it comes to marine weather it really boils down to wind prediction. Wind drives a sailboat and creates the waves. Severe weather and associated strategies are a concern, but sailors spend far more time dealing with too little wind than too much wind. In addition to avoiding too much wind, this course teaches you how to find more wind when there is little to none be had.
Students will learn to integrate marine weather into their overall navigation using the latest technological tools as well as traditional maritime skills such as the barometer, wind, clouds, and sea state observations. Also included are the theory, properties and behavior of squalls, fronts, storms, hurricanes, fog and global wind patterns and the study of weather maps.
With weather being the most pressing factor in a journey by sail, this course is a must-do.
