Boat measurement is almost complete. I will be listing remaining issues in
another e-mail.

It is now time to address sail measurement and mandatory equipment
inspection. We will need some inspectors to help with this process. Please
volunteer. It will not be an onerous task.

Sail Measurement and Inspection for the 2011 Sonar North American
Championship Regatta

Sail Measurement

Basically, there won't be any sail measurement!!! There will be inspection
of sails for the purpose of equipment control.

I have communicated with Gene Hinkel, International Measurer, and Lee
Morrison, Chief Measurer, on the subject of how to measure sails and floor
layouts.

They told me that for the last few years sails made by North, Quantum, and
Doyle have been measured and, with one minor exception, all have measured
in. They say that sails made by North, Quantum, and Doyle with a
certification label (royalty) can be expected to meet measurement standards.

What we will do

. You will present the sails you intend to use in the regatta for
inspection

. We will inspect the sails for the manufacturer and certification
label (royalty)

o If the sail is not built by an approved manufacturer, it will be
measured according to the Sonar Rule

. We will initial the sails and record information about the sails

. You will be required to use only sails which have been inspected

. If it is necessary to substitute a sail because of damage, you
must receive permission from the jury

Sails to be presented

You may present one mainsail, up to two jibs, and up to two spinnakers for
inspection.

Inspection

All boats will be inspected for mandatory standard safety equipment listed
in the Sonar Rule which is

C.3 EQUIPMENT
C.3.1 FOR USE
(a) Mandatory

(i) Personal buoyancy for each crewmember, each having positive buoyancy of
not less than 6 kg. (6 kg is 13.2 lb)

(ii) One throwable flotation device such as a cushion or ring with positive
buoyancy of not less than 3 kg. (a standard throwable cushion is acceptable)

(iii) One hand bailer or bucket of not less than 6 liters capacity. (A
2-gallon bucket will do the job)

(iv) One hand bilge pump. (may be installed in boat)

(v) One anchor of not less than 3.6 kg in weight and with not less than 30 m
of continuous line of not less than 8 mm in diameter. (3.6 kg is ~8 lb, 30
m is ~100 ft, 8 mm is 3/8 in)

(vi) Hatch covers for the companionway opening with a removable lower cover
not less than 15 cm in height. (15 cm is ~6 in)

C.3.2 NOT FOR USE
(a) Mandatory

One paddle or oar extendable to at least 1.5 m in length. (1.5 m is ~5 ft)

All mandatory safety equipment must meet the specifications and must be on
board the boat while racing.
